The Rouvas Forest is located in the southeastern part of the Psiloritis mountain range and is the most important of the few remaining natural forest ecosystems in the Heraklion Prefecture, with immense ecological and aesthetic value.

It is included in the “NATURA 2000” network (Mount Ida – Psiloritis). Since 2001, a large part of the area (80%) has been designated as a Wildlife Refuge.

The area features a rugged relief, creating distinct micro-environments throughout the forest. It is characterized by a diversity of landscapes, high biodiversity, the presence of many endemic animal and plant species of Crete and Greece, rare plant formations, and rare and endangered species.
