Agiofarago Gorge

Agiofarago is a stunning small gorge located south of Matala. Its name reveals the purpose of the traveler centuries ago. According to legend, three hundred hermits once lived in the caves here, surviving on the vegetables and fruits of the gorge.

It is said that once a year they gathered at the “Goumenos Spilio,” a cave that visitors can still see and admire today. There, a stone seat awaited each of them. If someone was absent, it meant that he had passed away.

Today, you can hike through Agiofarago and admire its rare beauty, as well as the old church of Saint Anthony, which during the time of the hermits served as the religious center of the area. In the church courtyard there is an old well that still provides drinking water today. A little further down—about half an hour on foot—you can relax at the beach.
